Email Delivery, with Personality… No Canned Spam

 

We've been offline for two weeks from our Internet Phenomenon emails. We had some hassles with our old email provider and literally crash tested many of the “top” email providers around. It took us two weeks but we've come out on top.114796-postman-pot

We had to get this right because of the Can Spam Act…

What is the ‘can-spam-act'?

No it's not legislation against eating canned spam…

…although that may be something that the govt should consider – seriously that stuff is disgusting!

I used to have an uncle who loved that stuff and always took a few cans when we went camping…

… and he always tried to get me to eat it! It's nasty.

Sorry getting off track a bit there…

The can spam act 2003 was a law regarding mass unsolicited emails promoting Viagra or dating sites or credit card offers….

However what that meant for businesses that use email to stay in touch with their customers was that they could no longer just jump onto outlook and mail to a big list…

– the ISP's (Internet Service Providers) would block the emails and they would never arrive.

And that's even if you were a legit business and all those people on your list really wanted to hear from you.

This is the main thing you need to get right for your internet business

Thankfully there are services out there that have made it their business to make sure your emails arrive to your customers. they have teams of people who do nothing but make sure that each batch email you send out keeps the ISP's happy so that they deliver your emails and get your message across.

When you are running an online business and especially if you are driving traffic to your web page or your offer – it means that you are connecting with people who are looking for the solution you are providing…

If you are not making them an offer and collecting their contact details then you are doing them a disservice…

If those people are willing to give you their contact details then they want you to make contact – and give them some good information and offer them things that you have found could improve their situation or get them to where they want to go faster.

All you have to do is make sure that you comply with the can spam act, and if you use an email service then you will – simple as that.

There is in fact an entire business model based entirely on the email model…

You still need a website but really only as a platform where people can sign up to your newsletter or email updates… but more about that in another email…

That system begs more than just a few lines in an email to really do it justice…

Anyway the moral of this story is make sure you pick a good email provider (and there are quite a few to choose from) and then make sure you have a sign up for on your website – Return-Path-Intelligence-report-Q4

…preferably where you offer visitors something of value in exchange for their email – i.e. that you will email them the ‘gift' when they sign up…

And then stay in touch – let them know about your great information – share some good stuff with them. Make them an offer from time to time (that's the part where you make money BTW)

…and let them know you're human…

This one tip right here is huge…

I can't tell you how many lists or websites I've got on to where the person writing the blog post or the email get's all 10th grade English on me…

I don't know what happens – maybe they sit behind their keyboard and all the memories of school discipline come flooding back and before you know it they are writing a formal dissertation on whatever the heck they're supposed to be sharing…

I don't know about you but I just can't read that dry academic stuff… it turns me off and I start day dreaming about a life where everybody's happy and everyone just talks like regular people…

I'm raving again… but my point is this…

When you write to your customers – write like you are talking to them – like they are sitting in front of you and you are just chatting to them (as if they were a friend)…

No it's not formal and I'm sure all our English teachers would have a blue fit if they read it… but who cares?

At least it's real and your customers will actually read it. There's little point in spending all that time collecting a list and writing stuff to them if what you've written is just going to bore them to sleep.

The problem is this… formal writing is designed to convey information not personality… but your subscribers want both…

You've got an awesome personality (I'm sure of it) so writing like we're talking about is just a way for you to share that personality with the people who want your information.

Forget about trying to please all the people all the time – that's never going to happen.

Anyway I'll leave you with this final thought…

If you're not offending someone then you're not doing your job properly…

go get 'em!
